Casa Lapostolle, Le Petit Clos, Colchagua Valley 2018

The 2018 Le Petit Clos, second wine of Casa Lapostolle's Clos Apalta estate in Chile's Colchagua Valley, presents one of the more compelling value propositions in current fine wine markets. Scoring 94 points from both The Wine Advocate and Vinous, the vintage trades at a notable discount to every other available release in the range.

A Carmenere-led blend from one of South America's most acclaimed estates, the 2018 combines critical recognition with relative-value characteristics that have become increasingly rare among critically endorsed New World wines.

Investment analysis

Liv-ex market data as of April 2026 shows the 2018 Le Petit Clos trading at a clear discount to surrounding vintages from 2014 through 2022, despite earning 94-point scores from both The Wine Advocate and Vinous. This price-to-score disconnect is unusual within the Petit Clos range, where critic scores and market prices have historically tracked more closely.

The wine's positioning as the second label of a flagship Chilean estate provides exposure to one of South America's most reputable terroirs at a fraction of the cost of Clos Apalta itself. With strong critical endorsement and a pricing anomaly relative to peer vintages, the 2018 offers a defined relative-value characteristic within the Chilean fine wine segment.

Why we recommend this wine?

  • Consistent critical acclaim: The 2018 vintage earned 94 points from both The Wine Advocate and Vinous, placing it among the strongest scoring releases of Le Petit Clos.

  • Undervalued vintage: Liv-ex pricing shows the 2018 trading at a meaningful discount to all other available Petit Clos vintages, despite parity on critic scores.

  • Pedigree Chilean estate: Casa Lapostolle's Clos Apalta has consistently ranked among South America's most celebrated fine wine properties since its founding in 1994.

  • Approachable structure: The Carmenere, Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon blend offers near-term drinkability while retaining the depth and grip associated with the estate's flagship.

Dark garnet in hue. The complex nose offers plum jam, hints of smoke, herbs and pepper against a backdrop of cigar box and graphite. A ripe, broad, full-bodied red with precise acidity and a juicy, grippy flow (quite accomplished for the style), it ends with an intense, ripe finish. A red to hold on to.

Producer profile

Casa Lapostolle was founded in 1994 by the Marnier Lapostolle family, creators of Grand Marnier, in partnership with the late winemaking consultant Michel Rolland. The estate is located in the Colchagua Valley, one of Chile's most acclaimed red wine regions, and from the outset focused on producing world-class wines from its volcanic and granite soils. Clos Apalta serves as the flagship property, and the winery quickly established itself as one of South America's leading fine wine producers, earning a reputation for wines of exceptional concentration, complexity and ageing potential.

Le Petit Clos is the second wine of the Clos Apalta estate, sharing the same terroir and winemaking philosophy as its celebrated stablemate. Produced from a blend of Carmenere, Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon, it offers a more approachable expression of the estate's distinctive style while retaining depth and structure.
